The Army Combat Fitness Test replaced the two-minute push-up, sit-up and two-mile run of the old APFT with six events chosen to reflect the physical demands of combat tasks. Its scoring has been revised more than once since introduction, which is the single most important thing to know before using any third-party calculator: the event list is stable, the scoring tables are not.

The six events

The test is performed in a fixed order, with prescribed rest between events. Each event is scored out of 100 points, with a minimum standard required in every event as well as an aggregate total.

EventAbbreviationWhat it measures
3-Repetition Maximum DeadliftMDLLower body and grip strength; lifting and carrying casualties and equipment
Standing Power ThrowSPTExplosive power through the whole body, thrown backward overhead with a 10 lb ball
Hand-Release Push-Up, Arm ExtensionHRPUpper body muscular endurance, with hands released at the bottom of each repetition
Sprint-Drag-CarrySDCAnaerobic capacity and agility across five 50-metre shuttles including a sled drag and kettlebell carry
PlankPLKTrunk and core endurance; replaced the Leg Tuck in 2022
Two-Mile Run2MRAerobic endurance

Why the scoring tables keep changing

The ACFT was introduced as a gender- and age-neutral test, then revised after independent analysis showed markedly different pass rates between groups, moving to age- and sex-normed scoring. The Leg Tuck was replaced by the Plank in 2022 after data showed it was not measuring what the test needed. Standards have continued to be revised, including moves toward sex-neutral requirements for specific combat roles.

The consequence for anyone using a calculator is straightforward: a scoring table is only valid for the version it was built from. Third-party calculators go stale, and a score calculated against an obsolete table can be wrong in either direction. Verify against the current official standards before treating any number as meaningful.

What the events reward in training

The six events pull in genuinely different directions, and the common training error is over-indexing on the two that are easiest to practise. The deadlift and the two-mile run sit at opposite ends of the strength-endurance spectrum, and the sprint-drag-carry is the event that most reliably exposes an athlete who has trained only one of them.

The standing power throw is the event most improved by technique rather than fitness, because the throwing pattern is unfamiliar to most people and a substantial share of the initial score is coordination. The plank rewards specific trunk endurance and adapts quickly. Neither responds much to general conditioning, which makes both worth practising directly.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What are the six ACFT events?

The 3-Repetition Maximum Deadlift, Standing Power Throw, Hand-Release Push-Up, Sprint-Drag-Carry, Plank, and Two-Mile Run, performed in that order with prescribed rest between them.

What is a passing ACFT score?

Conventionally 60 points in each of the six events and 360 in aggregate, but standards have been revised more than once and can differ by role. Check current official Army standards rather than relying on a third-party figure.

When did the plank replace the leg tuck?

In 2022. The Leg Tuck was removed after data indicated it was not measuring trunk strength as intended across the force, and the Plank was adopted as the core endurance event.

Is the ACFT scored the same for everyone?

Not currently. It was introduced as age and gender neutral, then revised to age- and sex-normed scoring after analysis showed markedly different pass rates. Subsequent revisions have moved toward sex-neutral requirements for specific combat roles.

Which event should I train hardest?

The sprint-drag-carry discriminates most, because it demands strength, anaerobic capacity and agility together. The standing power throw is worth practising specifically, since early improvement there is largely technical rather than physical.
