Cómo Calculamos Sus Necesidades de Agua

This calculator gives an estimate of daily fluid needs based on body weight and activity level, intended as general guidance rather than a medically prescribed target. Fluid needs vary considerably between individuals and from day to day depending on climate, activity, diet and health status.

Adequate Intake (AI) figures for total water published by the US Institute of Medicine, now part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in its 2004/2005 Dietary Reference Intakes for Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate report.

How the calculation works

The calculator starts from national adequate intake benchmarks for total water, which include fluid from all drinks plus the water content of food, and scales a baseline drinking target from body weight. It then adds an allowance for activity level, since sustained exercise and heavy sweating increase fluid losses that need replacing, and for hot or humid conditions, which increase sweat losses even without exercise.

It is important to separate total water intake from drinking water intake. National adequate intake figures for total water, such as the 3.7 litres a day commonly cited for adult men and 2.7 litres a day for adult women in the United States, include water obtained from food, which typically supplies about 20 percent of total water intake in a mixed diet. The remaining roughly 80 percent, corresponding to about 2.5 to 3.7 litres a day, comes from drinks including plain water, other beverages and the moisture content of foods like fruit, vegetables and soups.

Signs your intake may need adjusting

Thirst, urine colour and urine frequency are practical everyday indicators most people can use without any calculation. Pale straw-coloured urine passed regularly through the day generally indicates adequate hydration for most healthy adults, while consistently dark urine, infrequent urination, persistent thirst, dry mouth or dizziness can indicate a need for more fluid, and should prompt medical attention if severe or persistent.

Needs rise with heat, altitude, illness involving fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, and with prolonged or intense exercise, particularly in hot conditions where sweat losses can reach well over a litre an hour in some people. Certain health conditions, including some kidney, heart and liver conditions, and some medications, such as diuretics, require fluid intake to be managed under medical guidance rather than by a general calculator, since both under- and over-hydration can be harmful in those situations.

Fluid needs during exercise, heat and altitude

During exercise, sweat rate varies enormously between individuals, commonly cited in sports science literature as ranging from roughly 0.5 to over 2 litres an hour depending on intensity, heat, humidity, clothing and individual physiology. The American College of Sports Medicine's position stand on exercise and fluid replacement recommends that athletes personalise their fluid strategy using pre- and post-exercise body weight changes, since a sweat loss of more than about 2 percent of body weight during exercise is associated with reduced performance and higher perceived effort.

Altitude increases fluid needs through faster breathing and increased urine output in the first few days of ascent, a physiological adjustment separate from heat-driven sweat losses; mountaineering and high-altitude medicine guidance commonly suggests increasing fluid intake somewhat above sea-level baseline during acclimatisation. Fever raises fluid needs by roughly 10 to 15 percent for every degree Celsius of temperature above normal, on top of any losses from vomiting or diarrhoea, which is why oral rehydration solutions containing electrolytes, not just plain water, are recommended for significant illness-related fluid loss.

Do I really need to drink 8 glasses of water a day?

The commonly quoted 8-glasses rule is a rough rule of thumb, not a precise scientific target. National adequate intake figures suggest a higher total water intake overall, but roughly a fifth of that normally comes from food, and individual needs vary with body size, activity and climate.

Does coffee or tea count toward fluid intake?

Yes. Despite a mild diuretic effect from caffeine, tea, coffee and other caffeinated drinks still contribute net fluid to the body and count toward total daily intake for most people who consume them regularly.

Can drinking too much water be harmful?

Yes, in excess. Consuming very large volumes of plain water in a short period, especially during prolonged endurance exercise, can dilute blood sodium levels and cause a rare but serious condition called hyponatraemia. This is uncommon in everyday life but is a recognised risk in endurance sports.

Why does the calculator ask about exercise and climate?

Sweat losses from exercise and hot or humid weather increase how much fluid the body needs to stay in balance, so both are used to adjust the baseline estimate upward from the general adequate intake figures.

How much extra fluid do I need during a long workout in the heat?

It depends heavily on the individual and the conditions, but sports science guidance suggests personalising intake using body weight change: weigh yourself before and after exercise, and aim to replace roughly the weight lost as sweat over the following hours, since losing more than about 2 percent of body weight through sweat is linked to reduced performance.
