Quick Reference Guide
A reference range is not a definition of health. It is the interval containing the central 95 percent of results from a reference population, which means that by construction about one in twenty healthy people falls outside it on any given test. Understanding that single fact changes how a slightly out-of-range result should be read, and it is the most useful thing a reference chart can teach.
Common adult reference ranges
The values below are commonly used adult ranges. They are for orientation only: every laboratory establishes its own ranges based on its analysers, methods and local population, and the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.
- Units differ by country. The same analyte is reported in mg/dL in the United States and mmol/L across much of the world, and the numbers look nothing alike.
- Ranges differ by sex for several tests, and by age for many more, particularly in children where they change substantially with development.
| Test | Common adult range | Units |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium | 135 to 145 | mmol/L |
| Potassium | 3.5 to 5.0 | mmol/L |
| Chloride | 98 to 107 | mmol/L |
| Bicarbonate | 22 to 29 | mmol/L |
| Urea nitrogen (BUN) | 7 to 20 | mg/dL |
| Creatinine | 0.6 to 1.2 (men), 0.5 to 1.1 (women) | mg/dL |
| Glucose, fasting | 70 to 99 | mg/dL |
| Calcium, total | 8.5 to 10.2 | mg/dL |
| Haemoglobin | 13.5 to 17.5 (men), 12.0 to 15.5 (women) | g/dL |
| White cell count | 4.5 to 11.0 | x10^9/L |
| Platelets | 150 to 400 | x10^9/L |
| ALT | 7 to 56 | U/L |
| AST | 10 to 40 | U/L |
| Albumin | 3.5 to 5.0 | g/dL |
| TSH | 0.4 to 4.0 | mIU/L |
How reference ranges are built
A laboratory establishes a range by measuring an analyte in a group of apparently healthy reference individuals and taking the central 95 percent of the resulting distribution. Everything about that process has consequences. The range describes a population rather than an individual, it excludes the healthiest and least healthy 2.5 percent at each tail by design, and it is specific to the method and analyser used to generate it.
This is why a comprehensive panel almost always contains something slightly out of range. With twenty independent tests, the probability that all twenty fall inside their ranges in a genuinely healthy person is only about 36 percent. A single marginal value on a broad panel is usually a statistical artefact of testing many things at once, not a finding.
- A result just outside the range is a prompt to consider context and possibly repeat, not a diagnosis.
- A result well inside the range can still be abnormal for you if it has moved substantially from your own previous values.
Why trends beat single values
For many analytes, the change from your own baseline carries more information than the position within the population range. A creatinine rising from 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL is entirely within the reference range at both points, yet it represents a near halving of estimated filtration and is clinically significant. A haemoglobin drifting down over successive tests matters even while it stays above the lower limit.
This is the practical reason to keep your own results. Laboratories change methods and ranges over time, and different laboratories are not directly comparable, but a series from the same laboratory using the same method is the most informative thing most people can bring to a consultation.
حدود الاستخدام
- Reference ranges are laboratory specific. Always use the range printed on your own report rather than any general chart, including this one.
- Ranges vary by age, sex, pregnancy, altitude and sometimes ancestry, and paediatric ranges differ substantially from adult ones across most tests.
- By construction, about one in twenty healthy people falls outside any given range, so isolated marginal results on a broad panel are expected.
- Units differ internationally. Comparing a value in mg/dL against a range in mmol/L, or the reverse, produces nonsense.
- Pre-analytical factors change results: fasting status, time of day, posture, tourniquet time, haemolysis and recent exercise all shift specific analytes.
- This chart cannot interpret a result. Laboratory values mean something only alongside symptoms, history, examination and other results.
الأسئلة الشائعة
What does it mean if my result is slightly out of range?
Often nothing. Reference ranges contain the central 95 percent of a healthy population, so about one in twenty healthy people falls outside any given range. On a twenty-test panel, at least one marginal value is the expected outcome rather than a finding.
Why do reference ranges differ between laboratories?
Because each laboratory establishes ranges from its own analysers, methods and reference population. The same blood sample analysed at two laboratories can produce results interpreted against different ranges, which is why the range on your own report is the one that applies.
Can a normal result still be abnormal for me?
Yes. A creatinine rising from 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL stays within the reference range at both points but represents a substantial fall in kidney filtration. Change from your own baseline often carries more information than position within the population range.
Why are US and international lab values so different?
They use different units. The United States generally reports mass concentration such as mg/dL, while most other countries report molar concentration in mmol/L. The conversion factor differs for each analyte and depends on its molar mass.
Do I need to fast before blood tests?
It depends on the test. Fasting matters most for glucose and traditionally for lipids, though non-fasting lipid panels are now accepted for routine assessment. Follow the instruction given with the request, since the reference range assumes the stated collection condition.
