FFMI = Сухая Масса Тела(кг) ÷ Рост²(м)

The Fat-Free Mass Index, or FFMI, expresses a person's fat-free (lean) body mass relative to their height, in a similar way to how Body Mass Index expresses total weight relative to height. Because it strips out body fat from the calculation, FFMI is used as a rough indicator of how muscular a person is for their height, independent of how lean or heavy they currently are. It is most often discussed alongside a well-known "natural ceiling" figure derived from a 1995 study of bodybuilders.

Формула

Fat-free mass (kg) = body weight (kg) x (1 - body fat %). FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) / height (m)^2. Adjusted FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 x (1.8 - height in metres)

Kouri EM, Pope HG, Katz DL, Oliva P. Fat-free mass index in users and nonusers of anabolic-androgenic steroids. Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, 1995.

How the calculation works

FFMI starts from an estimate of body fat percentage, which is used to split total body weight into fat mass and fat-free mass (muscle, bone, organs, water and connective tissue). Fat-free mass in kilograms is then divided by height in metres squared, giving a number on a similar numeric scale to BMI but reflecting lean tissue rather than total weight.

Because taller people naturally carry more fat-free mass in absolute terms without necessarily being more muscular relative to their frame, researchers proposed a height-normalised adjustment. This adds a correction term based on how far a person's height is from 1.8 metres (about 5 feet 11 inches), which is the reference height used in the original study. The adjustment makes FFMI comparable across a wider range of heights and is the figure most commonly quoted when people discuss "natural" muscularity ceilings.

The accuracy of any FFMI figure depends entirely on the accuracy of the body fat percentage used to calculate it. Body fat percentage itself is an estimate, whether it comes from skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance scales, DEXA scanning or a visual estimate, and each method carries its own margin of error that carries directly through to the FFMI result.

How to read your result

The ranges below are commonly cited interpretations of adjusted FFMI for adult men; equivalent figures for women are typically several points lower because women naturally carry a higher essential body fat percentage and different average muscle mass. These are descriptive bands drawn from population data, not clinical cutoffs, and individual results vary with genetics, training history, and measurement error.

Adjusted FFMI (men)General interpretation
Below 18Below average muscle mass for height
18-20Average, untrained-to-lightly-trained range
20-22Above average, consistent with regular resistance training
22-25High, consistent with years of dedicated strength training
25 and aboveApproaching or above the natural ceiling described by Kouri et al, 1995

The natural ceiling discussion and its limits

The 1995 study by Kouri and colleagues measured fat-free mass index in competitive bodybuilders and found that almost none of the men who reported no history of anabolic-androgenic steroid use exceeded an adjusted FFMI of about 25 kg/m2, while several steroid users measured well above that figure. This finding is the origin of the widely repeated idea that roughly 25 kg/m2 represents an approximate upper limit of what is achievable through training and diet alone for most men.

It is important to treat this as a population-level observation from one study of a specific, self-selected group of competitive bodybuilders, not as a hard biological law that applies to every individual. A small number of people with unusually favorable genetics, very long training histories, or larger frame sizes have documented adjusted FFMI values above 25 kg/m2 without steroid use, and the original sample size was modest by modern research standards. The self-reported nature of steroid use in the original study is also a limitation, since it relied on participants disclosing use accurately.

FFMI and its "natural ceiling" figure are best used as a rough, population-based reference point for discussion rather than as a verdict on any individual. A single FFMI number cannot determine whether a specific person's muscle mass was achieved naturally, because measurement error in body fat percentage alone is often large enough to shift someone across the boundary in either direction.

Частые вопросы

What counts as a "good" FFMI?

For adult men, an adjusted FFMI in the low-to-mid 20s is generally considered a sign of substantial muscle mass built through consistent resistance training over years. There is no single universally agreed "good" number, and the ideal figure depends on goals, sport, and individual frame size rather than a fixed target.

Why does the calculator adjust for height?

Raw FFMI tends to run higher for taller people even at similar relative muscularity, simply because a taller frame carries more fat-free mass in absolute terms. The height adjustment corrects for this so that FFMI values are more comparable between people of different heights.

Does a high FFMI prove someone used steroids?

No. A high FFMI on its own cannot prove steroid use. The 25 kg/m2 figure is a population-average observation from a small 1995 study, and documented natural outliers exist above that figure, particularly among people with favorable genetics, larger frames, or many years of training.

Is FFMI different for women?

Yes. Because women naturally carry a higher essential body fat percentage and generally have less total muscle mass than men at a similar training level, typical FFMI ranges and any discussion of a "natural ceiling" for women run lower than the figures derived from the mostly male samples in the original research.

How accurate does my body fat percentage estimate need to be?

Fairly accurate, since FFMI is calculated directly from it. A body fat estimate that is off by even 3 to 5 percentage points, which is common with home scales and simple caliper protocols, can shift the resulting FFMI by a meaningful amount, so treat the output as an approximate figure rather than a precise measurement.
