A macronutrient, or macro, split divides a daily calorie target between protein, fat and carbohydrate, the three nutrients that supply the body with energy. Splitting calories this way is used for general healthy eating, weight management and sports nutrition planning, since the balance of macros can affect satiety, muscle maintenance and training performance even when total calories stay the same.

How the calculation works

How popular diet patterns compare on macro splits
Many named diets are, at their core, different macro splits with a food philosophy attached. Comparing them against the AMDR range clarifies which sit inside standard guidance and which are deliberately outside it, usually to achieve a specific metabolic effect such as ketosis.

Limites
- The AMDR ranges are population averages for healthy adults and are not tailored to individual medical conditions such as kidney disease, where protein intake needs specific adjustment, or diabetes, where carbohydrate quality and timing matter as much as quantity.
- They were not developed for infants under 1 year of age, and different ranges apply to children and adolescents.
- The ranges are not specific to pregnancy or breastfeeding, both of which increase protein and overall energy needs.
- A percentage split does not describe food quality. A carbohydrate share met mostly with refined sugar behaves very differently in the body than the same share met with vegetables, legumes and whole grains, even though the macro numbers look identical.
- As the 2024 National Academies review noted, the evidence underlying the specific AMDR percentage cut-offs is considered weaker than for other nutrient reference values, so the ranges should be treated as general guidance rather than a precisely validated target.
