Gabapentin is prescribed by veterinarians for neuropathic pain, as an adjunct in seizure management, and increasingly for situational anxiety before veterinary visits. Dosing in dogs spans a very wide range depending on the indication, and it is used off-label, meaning it is not licensed for veterinary use and dosing comes from clinical experience and the veterinary literature rather than from a product licence. This page is educational; dosing must come from your veterinarian.

The xylitol hazard

This is the single most important thing on this page. Many human liquid gabapentin formulations are sweetened with xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Xylitol triggers a rapid insulin release in dogs, causing severe hypoglycaemia within 30 to 60 minutes, and at higher doses acute liver failure. It is not a mild ingredient concern; it is a genuine emergency.

Human gabapentin capsules and tablets do not generally contain xylitol, but liquid formulations frequently do. If a veterinarian prescribes a liquid, confirm the formulation is xylitol-free, and never substitute a human liquid product on your own initiative.

Why the dose range is so wide

Published veterinary dose ranges for gabapentin in dogs vary by roughly an order of magnitude across indications, which surprises owners who expect a single figure. Doses used for chronic neuropathic pain are typically at the lower end and given several times daily; doses used as a single pre-visit anxiolytic are typically much higher and given once, a couple of hours before the appointment.

On top of that, gabapentin has a short half-life in dogs, on the order of a few hours, which is why chronic dosing is usually two or three times daily rather than once. Dose is also commonly titrated upward from a low starting point according to response and sedation, so the right dose for a given dog is arrived at over time rather than calculated once.

Practical points for owners

Gabapentin should not be stopped abruptly in a dog taking it for seizure control, because withdrawal can precipitate seizures. Tapering is done under veterinary direction. For dogs taking it for pain or anxiety, the same caution is less critical but tapering is still usually advised after prolonged use.

Because sedation is the main effect owners notice, it is worth agreeing with the veterinarian in advance what degree of sedation is expected and acceptable, particularly for a pre-visit dose in an older or arthritic dog where excessive sedation raises the risk of falls.

Частые вопросы

Is human gabapentin safe for dogs?

Capsules and tablets are commonly prescribed by veterinarians, but human liquid formulations frequently contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs and can cause severe hypoglycaemia and liver failure. Never give a human liquid product without veterinary confirmation that it is xylitol-free.

Why do published gabapentin doses for dogs vary so much?

Because the dose depends heavily on the indication. Chronic neuropathic pain uses lower doses several times daily, while a single pre-visit anxiolytic dose is typically much higher. Doses are also titrated to response and sedation.

How long does gabapentin take to work in a dog?

For situational anxiety it is usually given a couple of hours before the event. Its half-life in dogs is short, on the order of a few hours, which is why chronic dosing is normally two or three times daily.

What are the side effects?

Sedation and mild incoordination are most common and often lessen after several days. Marked lethargy, difficulty standing, vomiting or diarrhoea should be reported to the veterinarian.

Can I stop gabapentin suddenly?

Not in a dog taking it for seizure control, where abrupt withdrawal can precipitate seizures. Tapering should be done under veterinary direction. Tapering is also usually advised after prolonged use for other indications.
